Recipe Scaler
Scale ingredients for any guest count.
How does the recipe scaler work?
The recipe scaler calculates a multiplier by dividing your desired servings by the original servings. Each ingredient amount is then multiplied by this factor, giving you the exact quantities needed for your target guest count. For example, scaling from 4 to 8 servings uses a 2× multiplier — every ingredient doubles. The tool works for both increasing and decreasing recipe sizes, making it perfect for dinner parties, meal prep, or reducing a large recipe for a smaller household.
How to use the Recipe Scaler
Enter the original number of servings and the number you want. Click "+ Add ingredient" for each item in your recipe. Fill in the ingredient name, its original amount, and the measurement unit. Click "Calculate" to see all the scaled amounts. Use "Remove" to delete any ingredient row and adjust your list as needed.
Example calculation
Original recipe for 4 servings: 200g flour, 100g sugar, 50g butter. Scaling to 10 servings gives a multiplier of 2.5×. New amounts: 500g flour, 250g sugar, 125g butter. The calculator handles any number of ingredients and shows the multiplier for your reference.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I scale a recipe down for fewer servings?
Yes, if your desired servings are fewer than the original, the multiplier will be less than 1. For example, scaling from 8 to 2 servings uses a 0.25× multiplier. All ingredient amounts are reduced proportionally.
Do I need to adjust cooking times when scaling?
This calculator only scales ingredient quantities. Cooking times generally don't scale linearly — larger batches may need longer cooking but not necessarily proportional to the multiplier. Always monitor your dish and use visual and temperature cues for doneness.
