Laminate / Vinyl Calculator
Estimate packs needed for flooring with 10% waste.
How does the laminate/vinyl flooring calculator work?
This calculator estimates the number of packs you need to buy for your flooring project. Enter your room dimensions, the size of a single board, boards per pack, and a waste percentage (typically 10%). The tool computes the total floor area, adds the waste margin for cuts and off‑cuts, then divides by the area covered by one pack. It rounds up to full packs, so you'll never order too few.
How to use the Laminate / Vinyl Calculator
Measure your room's length and width, and check the board dimensions and pack size on the product packaging. Enter all values in meters or feet, set the waste (10% is standard), and click "Calculate". The result tells you exactly how many packs to buy. Always keep one extra pack for future repairs if possible.
Example calculation
Room 5 m × 4 m = 20 m². Board: 1.2 m × 0.2 m = 0.24 m² per board. 8 boards per pack → 1.92 m² per pack. With 10% waste, total area needed ≈ 22 m². 22 ÷ 1.92 = 11.46 → round up to 12 packs. The calculator does all this math instantly for any measurement system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is 10% waste recommended?
The 10% accounts for off‑cuts when trimming boards to fit the room edges, around door frames, and for pattern matching. Complex room shapes or diagonal laying patterns may require 15% or more. Simple rectangular rooms with straight lay can sometimes work with 5–7%.
Can I use this calculator for other floor types?
Yes, the same logic works for any plank‑style flooring — hardwood, engineered wood, or SPC. Just adjust the board dimensions and pack size. For tile flooring, use a dedicated tile calculator that accounts for grout spacing.
